Now I am going to mention various items of public expenditure. Could you please tell me if you believe that in your country it would be better to spend more or less on each of them: Education? 0 = spend less, 1 = spend more

I’m going to name some of these problems, and for each one I’d like you to tell me whether you think the [Federal/National] government is spending too much money on it, too little money, or about the right amount. Should [Federal/National] spending on financial aid for college students be increased, decreased, or kept about the same? 0 = decreased, 1 = kept the same, 2 = increased

Next, I am going to read you a list of [Federal/National] programs. For each one, I would like you to tell me whether you would like to see spending increased or decreased. If you had a say in making up the [Federal/National] budget this year, which of the following programs would you like to see spending increased and for which would you like to see spending decreased? Public schools? 0 = decreased, 1 = kept the same, 2 = increased

Finally on election issues, I want to ask about some changes that have been happening in [Country] over the years. For each one I read out can you say whether you think it has gone too far, not gone far enough, or it is about right: Government spending on education. 0 = gone too far, 1 = about right, 2 = not gone far enough

Again suppose that, for each of the seven areas of government spending, the government had to choose between these three options: Increase spending and raise taxes for every adult in [Country] by [amount], keep spending and income tax about the same as now or cut spending and reduce taxes for every adult in [Country] by [amount] a year? Education. 0 = cut spending and reduce taxes, 1 = keep spending and income tax about the same as now, 2 = increase spending and raise taxes

Around election time people talk about different things that our government in [Capital] is doing or should be doing. Now I would like to talk to you about some of the things that our government might do. Of course, different things are important to different people, so we don’t expect everyone to have an opinion about all of these: If cities and towns around the country need help to build more schools, the government in [Capital] ought to give them the money they need. Do you have an opinion on this or not? Do you agree that the government should do this, or do you think the government should not do it? 0 = disagree, 1 = not sure or it depends, 2 = agree
